In an ongoing effort to highlight the many facets of Tuscaloosa’s history, the people of our shared past, and the research contributions of University of Alabama students, Woman in a Dress is the featured fall exhibition.

In 2018, University of Alabama graduate student, Chalise Ludlow, researched and recreated dresses that belonged to Amelia Gayle Gorgas, the university’s late-nineteenth-century librarian, nurse matron, and postmistress. Following this initial work, Ludlow and university professor Dr. Virginia Wimberley created an exhibit to showcase the dresses, their research, and the recreation process. They installed this exhibit at the Gorgas House Museum in the summer of 2019 to share the pieces with the campus community and visitors to the museum. The current exhibit continues to share their work with more information on the dresses’ design, research process, and Amelia herself.

The Mildred Westervelt Warner Transportation Museum is proud to showcase Woman in a Dress from August 10 until September 18 to the greater Tuscaloosa/Northport community and partner with our colleagues at the Gorgas House Museum.
